Buying a futon did not seem, at first, as the most nightmarish task to accomplish: what could go wrong in buying this piece of furniture?

Isn’t it the pattern to buy one, easy enough: go to the shop, try a few, select one you like and go to the cashier?

This plan held just until you arrived at the furniture shop and were faced with the numerous choices of futons.

Defeated, you retreated home and starting browsing the Internet in the hope to find a very practical buying guide for futons.

And here we come!

Futons come from a long way since they first appeared in furniture shops; there are, now, so many styles and colours that the choice is yours to buy a comfortable one.

A futon is built with three parts: the frame, the mattress and the cover; and comes in three size types, twin, full and queen sizes.

Nowadays, the good thing about futon’s frames is that they come in all sorts of materials, from cheap metal to luxurious wood, so it caters for every budget and you can customize it to suit the design of your flat.

Moreover, since you were a student, futons have come a long way and mattresses are nowadays very comfortable.

They are similar to real mattresses and made from memory foam or inner spring or cotton; forget the thinner than thin mattress you used to sleep on when you had a futon ten-years-ago, a futon’s mattress doesn’t look like that anymore.

In addition to a more comfortable mattress, what you have to look for in a futon is the frame: mainly, you will have to choose between two types of frames, bi-folds and tri-folds.

Bi-folds futons are the most popular type of futons on the market, and the industry standard of built.

As for regular sofas, bi-fold futons have arms and legs and they fold once in the middle to pass from a sitting position to a sleeping position.

However, tri-fold futons, as their name indicates, unfold in three rather than in two parts: some have legs apparent and some sit directly on the floor.

The main advantage of the tri-fold futon is a larger sleeping area covered when the futon is unfolded.

As we said above, materials used for the frames of futons are plentiful these days and it gives you a great choice to suit the style of your flat: contrary to sofas, futons have an exposed frame.

The materials used for futons are mainly metal or wood frames: the metal ones are durable and cheap and usually come in black matte finish which makes it easy to fit in any room.

Wood frames, being higher-ends, are pricier than the metal ones, but come in quality woods as cherry wood, for example.

And last but not least: the mattresses.

Manufacturers have come a long way since the thin mattresses of the first futons: as of now, manufacturers have found ways to keep mattresses soft and folds easily when the futon is folded.

Finally, for those of you that fear the amount of traffic around your futon will bring its doom very quickly, manufacturers have thought about you and designed covers that slip easily over the futon mattress and partially protect it from spills and wear and tear.

In the UK, numerous companies are futons specialists and offer wide ranges, so finding your perfect futons should be easy.

Futons First, for example, offers futons in every style you can think of; the redaction here has set its eyes on a very modern-style futon, in the range “Bespoke Style 1”.

Prices starting around £380, the Nordic frame, with its stainless steel metal gives a touch of modernism to this futon.

The Futon Shop, on the other hand, makes more classical futons in their shape, but the colours and styles are so varied that it will be difficult for you not to find your perfect futon.

The “Panama futon sofa bed”, with its wooden frame and light blue cover is the perfect futon on which to relax after a long day at work.

The prices are ranging from £810 to £1,220 and include the size of the sofa and the wood material used for the frame.

The Futon Shop offers Pine wood, Ash wood, beech wood or Oak for this particular frame!

Futon Design, the third renowned futon shop in the UK, displays very classical futons (mattresses to unroll on the floor) to the most comfortable of futons with frames.

Mainly made with a wooden material, the futons are very neutral in their lines and so could easily fit in any room, whether the design of the room is classic or modern.

The “Rapid Futon”, priced at £295, is the one which we would like to bring home, with its simple system conversion and its clever storage drawers stored underneath the frame.

Lastly, we would like to evoke “Futon World”, who specialise solely on futons.

The futon “Iowa 3 seater Oak Futon” held our attention with its oak frame which makes it very high-end and priced at only £435, this is a right bargain!

Easily converted to a double-bed and back to a three seater, this sofa is very comfortable and can be put in lounges and offices for a classy touch.
