Back to school, return to work, holidays fading away and going back to your own house seems to be dragging you of all energy?

That may be because you can’t stand this old and crumpled sofa that is sitting in the middle of the living-room: as for everything in life, there are times when changes have to be carried.

And the time is now!

What better way to start anew than with a new sofa where you’ll be able to curl up during long evening with your loved ones, take naps during week-ends and read a good book in a comfy space…

Alas, once you stepped in a few furniture shops, you realised that your quest of the perfect sofa might take you longer than you thought because of all the choices available, the shapes, the colours, the styles…

Here is our guide on how to buy the best sofa for your needs!

First of all, what size is your living-room? You can’t really fit a 6-seaters in a small living-room; well, you can but you won’t be able to put much else.

Will you add coffee table, other chairs…? If the answer to this question is yes, then a simple sofa or one in L-shape will be best for your living-room.

Then, don’t forget to also think about its use: will kids jump on it? Will it be used for guests when they come over? Do you often receive overnight guests?

The best way to decide on the size of the sofa you’re going to fit in your living-room is to decide, before even going to the shop, where you will place the sofa and define that space with tape: it will give you a rough idea of the sofa’s best location.

Once you have decided on the size of the sofa, you have to think about the fabric you want on your sofa: leather sofas are easy to clean and resistant to wear and tear.

Now that you know the size of the sofa you want and the type of fabric, you can think more closely about the shape: a basic one, an L-shape, a round shape…?

Finally, we are coming down to the most important part of the selection process: style and colour.

Do not make the common mistake of buying a sofa that “looked at the furniture shop” without thinking how it would look in your own living-room.

Do not forget that a sofa that “looks good” in the shop window may look way out of place in your living-room so you have to see beyond the glamour of the presentation and stick to the idea you have.

If you have styled your living-room in a contemporary feel, find a sofa that has simple, straight lines and keep the upholstery in neutral tones whereas skirted sofas will look good in a more traditional home.

And last but not least: budget, the painful side of buying a sofa.

Once you have decided on the budget you are willing to spend on a sofa, stick to it, no matter what, but remember that quality buy will last you longer than cheaper items.

Now that you know what you want, it is time to head to the shop and try out all sofas that tick your list: do not hesitate to sit on them for a little while, just to get the feel of it, bounce lightly on it and see how the springs react and sit in different positions (shoes off if you want to put your feet on the sofa!) just to see if you really like this sofa or not.

For those of you within a tight budget, head to Ikea: yes, it is possible to find good quality furniture, even in Ikea!

The Kivik three-seater, in a deep-blue colour (but other colours are available), a three-seater is comfortable and sits well in any modern living-room with its sober lines.

Filled with memory foam, this is a pleasant sofa to sit on and it is not too harsh on the back; it is priced at £525.

One of the very comfortable sofa bed out there comes from Raft: the Manhattan Sofa bed, in an L-shape.

Coming with a footstool, it is so comfortable that it is said that guests sleep on it without even bothering up to open it to the bed part.

Fitting for many living-room, its neutral tone and sleek lines will make this sofa a nice anchor in any living-room and is price range starts at £2,325.

Laura Ashley, the furniture shop well-known for its quirky and classical items, sells this Embleton Leather 2-seater sofa from £1,100.

Comfortable and classic, this sofa will withstand wear and tear fairly well and its foam filled seat cushions mean that the sitting is snug.

As for the Brandon sofa from the Sofa Workshop, its square frame and contemporary lines are quite appealing: coming in all sorts of sizes, seaters and colours, the choices are yours to have fun and enjoy once home.

The small sofa prices start at £875 whilst the extra-large one starts from £1,149.

Habitat is also a nice place to browse for a sofa that is of quality and comfort: their ranges come in various styles, sizes, colours and shapes.

The sofa named “Air” is quite impressive with its modern design that can be used as a stand-alone piece or combined to form a corner unit.

Its light blue is quite relaxing and it is available in two sizes: 2-seaters or 3-seaters sofa.

Priced at £695, it would be a shame to overlook it!
